About JAC

JACradio is The School of Journalism and Communication’s very own student radio station.  JACradio operates from the School of Journalism and Communication and broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Students are trained in the art of broadcasting by industry consultants and academic staff from the School.  Further learning and training opportunities are available to students in radio programming, radio news and documentary making.  Our studio complex includes state of the art production facilities and the latest audio digital editing software. JACradio is committed to delivering the ultimate digital radio experience to UQ students.

JACradio is distinctively non-commercial, providing university students with a special brand of programming targeting the 18 – 24 age group but also embrace others who share similar tastes.  The station is designed to cater to students in all facets reflecting their aspirations and interests.  JACradio is uniquely local with programming that strives to be the 'voice' of young people.

It is hoped that over time, JACradio will produce high quality and distinctive content relevant to its listeners. We will develop a better understanding of the issues affecting young people in order to find new and creative ways of reporting.

We will drive innovation in programming through new distinctive approaches to traditional formats.

JACradio will offer broadcast and on-demand content that encourages students to listen to digital radio.

Professor Michael Bromley, Head of the School of Journalism and Communication, speaks here about the launch of JACradio [2:12]:

Engagement: JACradio serves to engage students with other dimensions of the UQ experience, and with the broader community. It provides opportunities for students engage with, discover and learn about academic, cultural and sporting activities across UQ campuses, through the production of broadcast audio; to engage in depth with people and places, causes and controversies, ideas and innovations.

Discovery: JACradio serves to disseminate in accessible form the unending variety of outstanding research generated by the University of Queensland. In itself, JACradio is already a site for discovery; a site for research into new models of digital radio programming, into m-learning modalities, and Gen Y learning styles.

Learning: JACradio is principally a quality learning experience for students. It aims to contribute to a rich student experience by providing students in the UQ journalism and communication programs (undergraduate and postgraduate) with knowledge, understanding and skills to produce compelling audio. It offers an opportunity to create content, to program and to operate an interactive Internet radio station. It develops effective communication skills, including interpersonal skills as well as specific aural skills, such as listening and speaking. It applies critical and independent judgement to sourcing, constructing and disseminating a body of work creatively, ethically and professionally.
JACradio is grounded in the pedagogic structures of the School of Journalism & Communication. It is embedded in JOUR2822 Journalism in Sound, and links across to courses such as JOUR3222 Journalism Production, and courses such as COMU7303 Communication Campaigns.

JACradio is about branding the audio and online content produced by UQ students in journalism and communication, and branding it as quality output, that is reliable and ethical.
